iPhone 7 Draws Tepid Notices

The iPhone 7 may be the best version of Apple's smartphone to date, but it's garnering lukewarm reactions from reviewers and pundits.
The practical improvements in the new iPhone are praiseworthy, wrote Andrew Cunningham in his review for Ars Technica, but he cautioned would-be buyers about the price they would have to pay for the upgrade.
"The iPhone 7 is a very good phone with the sorts of logical, useful upgrades that Apple typically delivers with new hardware," Cunningham wrote. "Waterproofing and better battery life have been common iPhone feature requests for years, and the camera and speed improvements are nothing to sneeze at, but you'll need to buy into Apple's vision of the future if you want to get them."

No Buttons or Wires

That vision includes a world without buttons or wires.
Among the new features in iPhone 7 is the replacement of a physical home button with pressure sensors and haptic vibration motors that simulate the feel of a button.
"It's clear that Apple is continuing its approach of removing any mechanical moving parts from their devices where possible," IHS Markit Senior Director Ian Fogg told TechNewsWorld.
Apple also has omitted the headphone jack in the new iPhone.
"This move was done with the clear vision of making the iPhone experience completely wireless in the future," Creative Strategies President Tim Bajarin told TechNewsWorld.

Prototype Phone?

While some reviewers saw the iPhone 7 as a harbinger of Apple things to come, they couldn't hide their disappointment in the product in their hands.
"The entire time I was using the iPhone 7, I felt like I had a prototype of next year's rumored drastic iPhone redesign disguised as an iPhone 6," Nilay Patel wrote in The Verge.
"All those bold bets on the future are legitimately exciting," he continued, "but here in the present using the iPhone 7 in a case feels a lot like using an iPhone 6s with a weirder home button and more adapters."
There's more to the new iPhone than the here and now, David Pierce, writing for Wired, also suggested.
"So, no, the iPhone 7 won't blow your mind with its design or features," he noted.
"It's still a fantastic phone. And philosophically, it feels like Apple is throwing open a door. The iPhone 7 might not be a revolution, but it might be the catalyst for lots of them," Pierce continued. "Your phone will be better in a few months, and even better a few months after that. And wouldn't that be exciting?"

Playing Catch-Up

With iPhone 7, Apple is just keeping pace with its competition, according to a number of reviewers, including Geoffrey Fowler of The Wall Street Journal.
"Last year is when Apple should have put [the iPhone 7] on sale," he wrote. "Now Apple's just playing catch-up to Samsung, which added an equivalent camera and waterproofing to its Galaxy S7 six months ago."
Apple is also behind in display technology, with competitors already moving to OLED screens, maintained David McQueen, a research director at ABI Research.
"There is also still no mention of wireless charging or quick charge to the added listed of features, which surely must become a necessity now that the headphone jack has been removed," he told TechNewsWorld.
"For a 'major' upgrade year, consumers may feel a little short-changed when balancing between what has been added and what has been taken away before thinking of upgrading," McQueen said.

Upgrade or Not?

On the burning question of whether iPhone owners should upgrade to the 7, reviewers were divided.
"If you're already carrying an iPhone 6s, there's little need to upgrade, unless you're a photography nut or desperately need better battery life," Lisa Eadicicco wrote in Time.
Gordon Kelly, writing for Forbes, offered an opposing view.
"Pick up the iPhone 7 Plus with no knowledge of what's inside and you will be disappointed," he wrote.
"Apple really should have done more to modernize the exterior of the new model after three generations (smaller bezels, better grip, etc.) but there's still a lot here to enjoy," Kelly maintained. "That said, iPhone 7 Plus owners are likely to find just enough this year to keep them happy until Apple rips up the rulebook next year.

Wait 'til Next Year...

"Wait 'til Next Year," a refrain often heard around baseball parks at this time of year, was a common refrain among reviewers.
"This is a strong handset for sure," Edward Baig wrote in USA Today. "But if you can hold out, there's already talk that the truly dramatic leap forward for iPhone comes next year when this seminal smartphone celebrates its tenth anniversary."
At this point, Apple appears content at incrementally upgrading the iPhone rather than reimagining it, said Charles King, principal analyst at Pund-IT.
"Replacing the industry standard headphone jack with proprietary technology demonstrates that the company is also willing to continue raising the wall around its garden of products. If you prefer wider vistas, you'll have to find them with another vendor," he told TechNewsWorld.
"There are rumors that Apple is saving up surprises for next year's tenth anniversary model," he said. "If that's the case, all but the most dedicated Apple customers or photography fanatics would do well to skip upgrading to the iPhone 7 models."

ditched its traditional headphone jacks.

Apple CEO Tim Cook on Wednesday officially unveiled the iPhone 7 and iPhone Plus, confirming a rumor that has evoked widespread dread: The company has ditched its traditional headphone jacks.
The new iPhones are sleeker than their predecessors, though, as well as water resistant. Their biggest plus might be the advanced camera lenses that create what Apple touts as the most sophisticated smartphone camera in the world.

Cook -- who prefaced his presentation with a carpool karaoke session with hip hop artist/producer Pharrell Williams and late night talk show host James Corden -- also led his team in the introduction of the next-generation Apple Watch and a host of iOS upgrades, as well as educational offerings and new wireless headsets to replace traditional earpieces.

Perfect Pictures

The iPhone 7 has a 12-megapixel camera featuring optical image stabilization and a larger f/1.8 aperture and 6-element lens, for more detailed and brighter photos and video.

The iPhone 7 Plus adds a 12-megapixel telephoto camera to the 12-meg wide angle camera. Together, they allow 2x optical zoom and digital zoom at as much as 10 times greater capability.
The cameras have a 7-megapixel Facetime HD camera for sharper selfies.

Additional features are expected later this year. The dual 12-megapixel camera will feature a depth-of-field effect in the iPhone 7 Plus, and it will employ machine learning for sophisticated portrait-taking capabilities.
"What we are saying is this is the best camera we have ever made in iPhone," Apple Senior Vice President Phil Schiller said during the presentation.
The new phones feature a sophisticated new A10 Fusion chip that promises more power and longer battery life. Comprised of two high-performance cores and two high-efficiency cores, it runs twice as fast as the iPhone 6 on one-fifth the power. The new chip allows graphics performance three times faster than in the iPhone 6 on half the power, supporting more demanding gaming and professional apps.

The new processors are "revolutionary" in terms of the capabilities they give the new devices, remarked Ryan Reith, vice president, worldwide device trackers, at IDC.

Free the Headset

Clearly, the move to wireless headsets, with the new AirPods with the lightning connector, may prove to be the most controversial move of them all. The wireless pods are powered by a new W1 low-power chip, providing up to five hours of wireless listening.
Apple Airpods
The company's custom charging case offers an additional 24-hours of listening time.

Apple congratulated itself for its "courage" in making the move, but the reception it got suggested the company may have made too great a compromise.
"Killing the headphone jack and pushing customers toward Apple-made AirPods seems like a fundamental mistake to me," said Charles King, principal analyst atPund-IT.
However, "doing so is likely the only way that the company could ever fully profit from its (US)$3 billion Beats acquisition," he told TechNewsWorld.
The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus pricing starts at $649; however, customers can pay $32 a month through the company's upgrade program.
The program will be available for the first time in the UK and China.
The Apple Watch Series 2, a nod to hard-core runners who might want a device that's disentangled from the iPhone, could bolster its competitiveness in the wearable fitness game.
The new watches feature a more powerful dual-core processor and built-in GPS. After rigorous testing, they've been rated for swimming at a depth of 50 meters.

Apple Watch Series 2 comes in gold, rose gold, silver or space gray aluminum, or silver or space black stainless steel cases paired with a wide variety of bands. Pricing starts at $369.
A version of the watch ed with Nike -- Apple Watch Nike Plus -- features exclusive Nike sports bands, exclusive Siri commands, and integration with the Nike Plus Run Club app.

Apple Puts Its User-Friendly Stamp on Fancy iPhone 7 Cameras

Apple raised the ante for cameras in flagship phones with the announcement of its iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus on Wednesday.
Others already have taken the dual-camera approach to smartphonephotography -- notably HTC, LG and Huawei.
"While it's not the first dual camera mounted in a smartphone, it's on par with the others in terms of basic functionality," said Brian Blau, a research director for Gartner.
Going one step further, Apple has added its own powerful twist to the concept.
"Apple has updated the camera app to make using the dual camera easy -- and that could be their best feature, as focusing on the user experience is always one of Apple's strengths," Blau told TechNewsWorld.
The iPhone 7 Plus has two cameras that sit side-by-side on the back. There's the 12 megapixel camera with a 28mm lens found in the base version of the phone, as well as a camera with a 56mm lens. The setup allows a "phonetographer" to capture better zoom shots at greater distances from a subject.
iphone 7 plus wide-angle telephoto
"To my knowledge, that's the first time anyone has taken that approach with dual cameras," Ian Fogg, a senior director at IHS, told TechNewsWorld.

Proof in the Bokeh

The dual camera system, which has a 2x optical zoom and 10x digital zoom, also can produce depth-of-field effects. With the tap of an icon, the camera will focus on a subject in the foreground and blur the background, or bokeh, for a nice portrait effect.
However, the software for the portrait effect is not yet available -- it's expected later in the year as a free upgrade.
"We will have to see how the simulated bokeh looks in the real world," observed Stan Horaczek, online editor forPopular Photography and American Photo, "but having the ability to capture images with a true 56mm equivalent lens without having to digitally zoom is a pretty big deal."
Apple appears to be targeting some very specific aspects of the camera market in which dedicated cameras still have a distinct advantage, he added.
"The iPhone 7 Plus has an 'optical zoom' -- if you apply the term loosely -- which is something smartphone cameras typically can't do," Horaczek toldTechNewsWorld.
iphone 7 plus 2x
The 7 Plus's optical zoom doesn't zoom in the traditional sense of smoothly enlarging a subject. It jumps from one enlargement size to another.
"It also goes after the background blur, which acts as an indicator for many people that a photo was taken with a fancy -- or professional -- camera," Horaczek remarked.

iPhone 7 camera

Apple has improved the camera in the iPhone 7 as well.
iphone 7 over 100 billion operations
Image stabilization, previously found only on the Plus versions of the phone, is included with the base model. Image stabilization helps avoid blurry pictures caused by camera movement and hand shake.
iphone 7 image stabilization
The 7 also has a six-element f/1.8 lens for better performance in low light conditions. The new wider aperture allows more light to hit the camera's sensor and produce brighter shots with more detail.
"The move up to an f/1.8 lens from an f/2.2 is a solid move, but they're certainly not the first to do it," Horaczek said. "It also may not make as much of an impact as some people think."
In addition, the camera's flash is 50 percent brighter than the previous iPhone model. The four LEDs in the "smart" flash can adjust their output to the color temperature in a shot's frame for better pictures.
The front-facing camera has been upgraded, too. The resolution has been boosted to 7 MP, and it has wide color capture for sharper and more vibrant selfies.

RAW Support

Both the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus support saving image files in Adobe DNG, a RAW format. That could have a substantial impact on the application market, noted Horaczek.
"RAW photos hold more information than the compressed JPEGs we're used to, and that creates more flexibility in terms of editing," he explained.
"I think as people realize the power involved with the RAW workflow, they will start to gravitate toward more robust editing options like Adobe's Lightroom Mobile," he said.
"The capture process is so easy now -- the editing process has some room to grow beyond simple filters and cheesy effects," he added.
As good as smartphone cameras get, there's still a gigantic gap between them and professional cameras.
"If the new iPhone camera is a Corvette, then pro cameras are still Formula One cars," Horaczek said. "Sure, the Corvette is fast and a great car -- but in many circumstances, it can't compare to a true race car."
