Apple Store Update Brings Touch ID Authentication for Card Payments

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Apple Store app bumps its version to 4.3
  • It brings Touch ID support for payments with Apple ID
  • The update also shows if an iPhone is available at a nearby Store
Apple has released an update to its Apple Store app, and it brings along a host of improvements, including support for Touch ID for payments. Now, users can pay for products on the Apple Store using Touch ID as another secure and convenient way to authenticate for the tied credit card on your Apple ID.
While credit card payment has been the norm on the Apple Store since a long time, with Apple Pay, users had to go through an authentication process of typing their password associated with their Apple ID to carry forward the payment. With this update, users can now authenticate with Touch ID easily. To use this feature, tap on the Buy With Other Payment Options button while checking out, and use Touch ID to approve a payment on the credit card associated with your Apple ID.
Apple Store version 4.3 also brings the ability to see if the iPhone you want is available at an official store near you. The app will show you the price of the iPhone, monthly payment options, whether it’s available or not in a store near you, and also give you the full address of the Apple Store where you need to go and pick it up from. The app will also show you the store open and close timings for convenience. This will eradicate unnecessary visits to the Store, and also help you know whether your future iPhone 8 is in stock.
Furthermore, with this update, users can now also use Touch ID as an authentication format to get into the Apple ID account settings as well. The Apple Store app’s latest version can be found in the App Store for free download.

Samsung Surpasses Intel to Become Top Chipmaker in Terms of Revenue

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Samsung has reached the top spot in the semiconductor business
  • It has beaten Intel that held the top position for more than two decades
  • Samsung said its semiconductor business recorded $7.2 billion in Q2
Intel's more than two decade reign as king of the silicon-based semiconductor ended Thursday when Samsung Electronics surpassed the US manufacturer to become the leading maker of the computer chips that are a 21st century staple much as oil was in the past.
Samsung reported record-high profit and sales in its earnings report for the April-June quarter, and while Intel's reported earnings beat forecasts, the US company's entire revenue was smaller than sales from Samsung's chip division.
Samsung said its semiconductor business recorded 8 trillion ($7.2 billion) in operating income on revenue of KRW 17.6 trillion ($15.8 billion) in the quarter.
Intel said it earned $2.8 billion (roughly Rs. 17,960 crores) on sales of $14.8 billion (roughly Rs. 94,927 crores). Analysts had expected the US chipmaker to report $14.4 billion (roughly Rs. 92,359 crores) in quarterly revenue.
"Given Samsung's strength today in flash memory, I am not surprised Samsung surpassed Intel in semiconductor revenue," said Patrick Moorhead, principal analyst with Moor Insights & Strategy, adding that Intel may be able to catch up Samsung when Intel's memory output is at full production capacity in about six months. "I think we will see a lot of back and forth between the two companies."
On an annual basis, Samsung's semiconductor division is widely expected to overtake Intel's sales this year, analysts at brokerages and market research firms say.
Mobile devices and data are the keys to understanding Samsung's ascent as the new industry leader, even as its de facto chief is jailed, battling corruption charges, and it recovers from the fiasco last year over the fire-prone Galaxy Note 7 smartphones.
Manufacturers are packing more and more memory storage capacity into ever smaller mobile gadgets, as increased use of mobile applications, connected devices and cloud computing services drive up demand and consequently prices for memory chips, an area dominated by Samsung.
Just as Saudi Arabia dominates in oil output, Samsung leads in manufacturing the high-tech commodity of memory chips, which enable the world to store the data that fuels the digital economy.
"Data is the new crude oil," said Marcello Ahn, a Seoul, South Korea-based fund manager at Quad Investment Management.
For over a decade, Samsung and Intel each ruled the market in its own category of semiconductor.
Intel, the dominant supplier of the processors that serve as brains for personal computers, has been the world's largest semiconductor company by revenue since 1992 when it overtook Japan's NEC.
Samsung is reaping the rewards of dominating in the memory chip market that is growing much faster than the market for computers that rely on processing units dominated by Intel, said Chung Chang Won, a senior analyst at Nomura Securities.
"Greater use of smartphones and tablet PCs instead of computers is driving the rise of companies like Samsung," Chung said.
Since 2002, Samsung Electronics has been the largest supplier of memory chips, called DRAMs and NANDs. But for years demand for memory chips was vulnerable to boom-and-bust cycles depending on output and on demand from the consumer electronics industry. At times, competition was brutal as supply gluts arose.
That changed in 2012 when Japan's Elpida filed for bankruptcy and was sold to Micron Technology, leaving only three major suppliers of DRAM, a type of memory chip used in servers, computers and handsets: Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix and Micron.
Tight supplies coupled with rock solid demand have pushed prices of memory chips higher, with average selling prices of DRAMs and flash memory chips doubling over the past year, bringing South Korea's memory chip makers record wide profit margins. Both Samsung and SK Hynix are expected to report all-time high profits this year.
Amid this boom that analysts call a memory chip "super cycle," global semiconductor revenue is forecast to jump 52 percent this year, reaching $400 billion (roughly Rs. 25,65,531 crores) for the first time, according to market research firm Gartner.
For the full year, Intel is expected to post $60 billion (roughly Rs. 3,84,829 crores) in annual sales, according to a market consensus polled by FactSet, a financial data provider. Samsung Electronics' semiconductor business is expected to report KRW 71.9 trillion ($62.6 billion) in full-year revenues.
Looking ahead, Samsung and SK Hynix, which control more than three quarters of the global DRAM sales, are raising their spending on semiconductor capacity and development in anticipation of robust future demand. SK Hynix raised its capital spending to KRW 9.6 trillion ($8.6 billion) this year, up more than 50 percent from last year. Samsung has said it plans to spend $18 billion in the next four years to expand memory chip production capacity at its South Korean plants.
Not just tech companies but also transport, retail, tourism, food and other industries are seeking ways to better use or manage data, to gain insights on trends or customer preferences and otherwise make money from "big data." The rising use of vehicle connectivity and the "internet of things" is expected to drive still further demand for the chips that have helped Samsung move ahead, at least for now.

Mozilla Is Creating AI-Based Voice-Recognition Software Using Crowdsourcing

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Mozilla is asking users to pool information for open-sourced AI
  • Common Voice allows volunteers to donate their voice
  • Mozilla says this allows voice recognition to be a lot more accurate
Artificial intelligence has been at the forefront of technological advancements for a long time now. Today, AI can be found pretty much everywhere, from phones to smart speakers. And the technology is mainly thought to be in the hands of a few big names, such as Google, Apple, Facebook, and so on. For a company like Mozilla to jump into the AI game, things can get a bit difficult, but the company has found a way to collect the data it needs to get started - by giving the power to the public.
Mozilla is exploring an alternative way of gathering data, by asking users to pool information to power an open-sourced AI initiative, The Verge reports. One of the projects, for example, is called Common Voice, where users will be able to donate voice samples to create an open-sourced voice recognition system similar to how Siri and Alexa work. Companies like Google and Facebook have the benefit of having collected data via their respective products to help them build AI. For Mozilla, this initiative is a starting point in collecting data to start building its own AI software.
"Currently, the power to control speech recognition could end up in just a few hands, and we didn't want to see that," Sean White, vice president of emerging technology at Mozilla, tells The Verge. Big companies have the benefit of filtering data coming in, but for companies like Mozilla, other methods need to be taken. "The interesting question for us, is, can we do it so the people who are creating the data also benefit?"
Mozilla plans to open source its voice-recognition system by the end of the year. Anyone can head over to Common Voice to donate their voice by reading out some sample sentences. The company explains that volunteers who supply their personal information like age, location, gender, and accent, will be helping the software to reduce the error rate of recognising various accents, a problem faced by the likes of Siri even today.
Personalisation is a key factor Mozilla points out that sets its project apart from currently existing services. The company explains that traditional AI systems work on a collective datasets that doesn't necessarily identify individual, smaller groups among them. This can skew an AI-based voice recognition software, favouring the popular and the majority voices.
"For us to be successful with data commons, there has to be a motivation [for users] other than realising one day that they've been giving away all their personal data," says White. "We have to make their experience better because they've participated." White says that the focus here is on collecting as much accents as possible so that the system works on spot. However, while this may take longer time for Mozilla, bigger companies like Google, for example, have the monetary power to get third-party companies to swoop in and solve issues like - getting the right accents.
White says that Mozilla's initiative and vision is more along the lines of other open-sourced AI-based organisations like OpenAI, Healthcare.ai, and Comma.ai. But Mozilla understands that relying on open-source data alone may not help it take on the giants. Eventually, they may need to take help from third parties for some input. Chris Nicholson, CEO of deep learning company Skymind, says, "We may need third parties to step in - NGOs, governments, coalitions of smaller private firms - and pool their data."

16:19  Indrani told me she would kill Sheena, Mikhail, says driver :  Indrani Mukerjea's driver Shyamvar Rai who is a witness in the Sheena Bora murder case, deposed in the court on Friday and confessed that Indrani had told him that she would kill Sheena Bora and her stepson Mikhail.

"I was alone in office at that time, Indrani Madam told me on Skype I am a very trustworthy person and she wanted to tell me something which I cannot tell anyone. She told me that she will take responsibility of my child's education and all medical expenses of my family. She assured that my job as a driver will stay forever. She said that Sheena and Mikhail are defaming her by calling their 'mother' everywhere and this has started quarrels. Peter Mukerjea's son Rahul is in love with Sheena Bora and therefore she would have to kill Sheena and Mikhail," Rai told the court.

He added that Indrani told him to not worry and that a man will come from Kolkata to kill Sheena and Mikhail.

Rai, a resident of Madhya Pradesh's Chhindwara, further said that he was offered a job of driver at Indrani's place with a salary of Rs. 10,000 per month.

The driver also admitted that Indrani had paid him money for helping with the murder. "I along with Indrani and her husband Sanjeev Khanna, left to dispose of Sheena's body and burnt it in a forest in Gagode village of Raigad district on April 24, 2012," he said.

He added that his Skype account was created, but he could not recollect the password, however, the ID was "Shyawarrai".

Bora was allegedly killed in 2012, but the case came to light in 2015, after Rai's arrest. Rai is the crucial link in the case which led to the arrest of Indrani Mukerjea, her ex-husband Sanjeev Khanna for the murder of Sheena.

Meanwhile, Indrani will be interrogated in connection with the murder of Manjula Shetye, a Byculla jail prisoner, said Maharashtra minister Ranjit Patil. Patil announced the development in the monsoon session of the Legislature. Action will also be taken against the doctor of the JJ Hospital's Casualty Department, who gave false reports on Shetye's death.

Nalini, lodged in a special prison for women in Vellore, said she had sent representations to the Tamil Nadu chief minister and inspector general of prisons seeking parole, but there was no response from them. As a life convict she was entitled to be granted ordinary leave for one month once in two years, Nalini, who has been in prison for 26 years, contended, adding she had not availed any such leave so far.

"Since I have to make certain arrangements for the marriage of my daughter Harithra, who is currently living with her grandparents in London, I made a representation to the chief minister seeking six months parole on November 12, 2016," she said in her petition.

As there was no response, she sent another representation to the IG Prisons on January 23, but this too failed to get any response. Hence, she was compelled to move the court, Nalini said. The petition is likely to be taken up for hearing on Monday. Nalini was initially awarded death sentence which was later commuted to life imprisonment by the state government.

Addressing reporters after winning the trust vote, Modi said "Happy that the government led by chief minister Nitish Kumar has won vote of confidence, we will sit down soon to discuss about the cabinet.

"Lashing out at the Congress party, Modi said if they (Congress) had majority they would have proved it today in the House."It has become clear that the new alliance has received the mandate now and the un-natural alliance died naturally today. And that is why we kept saying that this alliance will not run for long," he added.

Attacking the RJD fraction, Modi said the people of Bihar want to know from Lalu Prasad Yadav and his son Tejashwi as to how, at the mere age of 28, did he amass so much wealth.

"Nitish Kumar took the right step at the right time and fought against corruption and did not bow down before Lalu," he added.

Earlier, former deputy chief minister Tejashwi Yadav on said that the mandate which was handed over by the people of Bihar in 2015 elections was for the grand alliance, adding that Nitish Kumar and the BJP had insulted that mandate.

"It is a murder of democracy. People of Bihar had given mandate in 2015 not for the BJP but for the grand alliance. He (Nitish) along with the saffron party has insulted the mandate," Tejashwi told the media here.

Tejashwi added the entire disturbing series of events had been planned in advance by the saffron party."Nitish ji is sitting in the lap of BJP and RSS which has disappointed the people of Bihar. The public feels betrayal. If he had to ultimately go to the BJP then did he change four parties in four years," he asserted.

14:20  Doval meets Xi :  Amid the Doklam standoff between India and China, Indian National Security Adviser Ajit Doval arrived in Beijing yesterday to attend the BRICS NSA's meeting on July 27-28. Doval met Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing, along with other BRICS High Representatives.

The latest standoff between two nuclear armed countries started when China started building a motorable road in Doklam area near Sikkim on June 16. India as well as Bhutan have raised strong objection to the Chinese aggression on the border.

China on June 26 alleged that Indian troops crossed the boundary line in the Sikkim sector of the China-India boundary.

Since then there is a tension between two countries.

India on June 30 told China that its attempt to construct a road in the Doklam area in Bhutan will cause a "significant change of status quo", is a "violation of a 2012 understanding", and will lead to "serious security implications."

However, given the Chinese stand on Doval's visit, it is not likely that the Indian NSA would be holding parleys with Chinese officials to cool-off the simmering tensions on India-China border.

A three-member bench of the Supreme Court, consisting of Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan, Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed and Justice Ijazul Ahsan had last week concluded the entire hearings and reserved its judgment in the Panamagate case in which Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his family are accused of amassing offshore assets, reports Dawn.

However, the majority judgement by the three-member bench gave an opportunity to the Prime Minister and his children to explain their position before a specially constituted six-man Joint Invesatigating Team (JIT).

Later, a three-judge bench consisting of the judges, who passed on the majority verdict, became the implementation bench overseeing the working of the JIT.

12:09  How did PM tweet so quickly after Nitish resigned, asks Tejashwi :  In the Bihar Assembly, Tejashwi Yadav holds forth:

He says CM Nitish Kumar never discussed my resignation with him. "If he had, I would have thought about it. I was taking legal opinion and I told him that. I am 22-years-old but I am never afraid. Nitish Kumar is still my uncle, but he betrayed me. If Nitish had asked me to resign, I would have thought of it: ," Tejashwi said.

"Sushil Modi is also facing cases. So why did he take oath (as deputy chief minister). Why was the timing of the oath-taking ceremony changed? How did Narendra Modi tweet so quickly on Nitish Kumars resignation?"

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had welcomed the Bihar Chief Minister's decision to resign from the post, congratulating Nitish on joining the battle against corruption. "125 crore people are welcoming and supporting your decision," the Prime Minister said on Wednesday moments after Nitish announced his resignation.

In another tweet, PM Modi wrote: "For the bright future of India, and particularly Bihar, it is imperative that one goes beyond political differences and fights corruption."

Tejashwi has been speaking for the last 15 minutes and is expected to speak for at least 40 minutes more.

Highlights of his speech...

There have been four governments in four years. Who is responsible for this? People want an answer.

Nitish Kumar has betrayed the 2015 mandate of the people.

You (Nitish Kumar) are using me as a pawn to go over to the BJP. You have gone from saying 'He Ram' when you saw the BJP to saying 'Jai Shri Ram'. He Ram se Jai Shri Ram mein chale gaye.

The mandate was for five years and it was against the BJP.

Nitish Kumar could not dare to sack me The BJP is greedy. Nitish fought alone in 1995 and got seven seats. In 2014, he was reduced to two seats. Where was his image then?

He said Nitish had planned to go with the BJP well in advance. Nitish's move is well planned. This whole farce was to save Nitish.

JD (U) leader Neeraj Kumar said that Nitish Kumar will get a full majority today. "Politics is about serving people, it's not a medium to collect money or property. According to the wishes of the state, the Chief Minister will win with complete majority and prove his ethical politics. We hope that he will strongly present his case in the assembly and also win the majority."

The BJP and Janata Dal (United) have issued whip to their legislators to vote in favour of the trust vote.

The RJD and the Congress have also issued a similar whip to their legislators.

The RJD wants a secret vote, a vote of conscience since they feel they can tap in to those JD-U MLAs who are unhappy with Nitish's alliance with the BJP. The RJD said this is vishwasghat or a betrayal by the JD-U and they will bring this up in the floor of the House. The JD-U has maintained that it is confident of a win. One RJD poster  calls Nitish Kumar, 'Kursi' Kumar.

Yesterday, in a flurry of tweets, Tejashwi hit out at the JDU and Nitish Kumar saying, "Vicious greed for power of opportunism will spell it's own doom. People are not fools that they digest their penchant for wicked power grab. Past baggage, though unjustified, didn't perturb me when I was entrusted to carry the expectations of people's mandate, in the role of DyCM! I delivered manifolds than what was expected of me. My performance perturbed our ally & BJP. Vendetta against me exposes their viciousness."

09:23  Burhan's successor made chief of new Qaeda cell in Kashmir:  The Guardian reports:

Former Hizb-ul Mujahideen commander Zakir Rashid Bhat, popularly known as Zakir Musa, has been appointed as the head of a newly created Al Qaeda cell in Kashmir.

'The appointment of Zakir Musa as head of the new group represents the first time terrorists linked to Al Qaeda have operated openly in Kashmir,' the report said.

'The new cell, named Ansar Ghawzat-Ul-Hind, is the deepest inroad Al Qaeda has yet made in Kashmir,' it said.

Recently, breaking from the secessionist movement's traditional leadership -- the Hurriyat Conference -- Musa had advocated Kashmiri allegiance to Islamic State.

In an audio slideshow released in May, Musa spoke about establishing an Islamic caliphate in Kashmir.

In the 5.40-minute-long clip, Musa also warned separatist leaders not to meddle in the move to set up a caliphate in Jammu and Kashmir 'along the lines of the rule established by the Islamic State in parts of Syria and Iraq'.

However, a Hizb-ul spokesman later claimed 'that the statement of Musa isnt acceptable and that the outfit has nothing to do with it'.

Musa, who succeeded Burhan Wani in the outfit, had dumped Hizb-ul after this fallout.  -- Agencies

00:16  'What Happened': Name of Clinton's candid memoir revealed:
Hillary Clinton's memoir about her failed attempt to win last year's US. presidential election will be called "What Happened," a declaration rather than a question, her publisher said in the run-up to its September 12 release.

Among the things the Democratic nominee will say happened are sexism against the first woman to be the presidential candidate for a major US party and "an unprecedented assault on our democracy by a foreign adversary," according to publicity material from the publisher, Simon and Schuster.

"In the past, for reasons I try to explain, I've often felt I had to be careful in public, like I was up on a wire without a net," Clinton wrote in the book's introduction. "Now I'm letting my guard down."
