Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos Says Excited to Keep Investing in India After Meeting PM Modi

HIGHLIGHTS

  • PM Modi on Sunday met with CEOs of 20 leading American firms
  • Amazon's Jeff Bezos lauded PM Modi's efforts during his meet with him
  • He further assured to keep investing in India in future
American online retail giant Amazon, which has committed investments to the tune of $5 billion in India, will "keep investing and growing in India", its chief Jeff Bezos has said.
After his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Bezos tweeted: "Terrific meeting with @narendramodi. Always impressed, energized by optimism and invention in India. Excited to keep investing and growing."
Bezos was among the 20 US business leaders who interacted with Modi as part of a roundtable interaction. Others in the group included Apple CEO Tim Cook, Google's Sunder Pichai, John Chambersfrom Cisco, Shantanu Narayen from Adobe and Ajay Banga from MasterCard.
Amazon, which has recently completed four years of operations in India, is locked in an intense battle for leadership with homegrown e-tailer Flipkart.

OnePlus 3, 3T to Get Android O Before the End of 2017, and More Revealed at Reddit AMA

HIGHLIGHTS

  • OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T to get Android O update
  • It will be made available before the end of this year
  • Android O commercial launch will happen with the launch of Pixel devices
OnePlus launched the OnePlus 5 smartphone last week. and on Monday, OnePlus held an AMA on Reddit to answer all fan questions. One such query was about when the promised Android O updatefor the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T would arrive. OnePlus then confirmed that both the phones will receive Android O before the end of this year. The company also confirmed that it has no plans of introducing expandable storage and that a tablet is not in the making as of now, but a $800 premium device may be on the cards.
OnePlus CEO Pete Lau had already confirmed that both the devices will receive Android O whenever it arrives, but it has now even confirmed the timeline before which you can expect it. If OnePlus stays true to its timeline, then it’s quite ambitious of the company to roll out the software update so soon after Android O’s commercial release. Android O has been released in developer betas, and is expected to go commercial sometime in October with the launch of the new Pixel devices.
The name of Android O has not been unveiled yet, but the latest evidence points to Android Oatmeal Cookie. Android Oreo has also been rumoured if a cross promotion deal is made, similar to Android KitKat. In any case, Google will unveil the final name in due course. The latest preview confirmed the Android version to be Android 8.0, something that was kept under wraps when Android O was first announced.

In the AMA, OnePlus was also pulled up for not living up to promise of updating the older devices on time, or dropping support for them very quickly. Co-founder Carl Pei also confirmed that OnePlus may never consider making a tablet but a premium device with a $800 price tag is on the cards. It was also asked about the recent benchmark cheating issue, but did not respond.
OnePlus also touched upon the delay of the OnePlus 5 early access packages, and said that customers who ordered the OnePlus 5 last week should see their parcels arrive this week. The company also confirmed that it will bring EIS for 4K video to the OnePlus 5 in a future software update, and address the Wi-Fi issue some early adopters are now reporting. You can read all the questions and responses asked in the AMA right here.
The OnePlus 5 was launched in India last week, first going up via Early Access Sale on Amazon India, and pop-up events across the country where it made the OnePlus 5 available offline as well. From Tuesday, it is available in an open sale on Amazon India, the OnePlus Store, and OnePlus Experience Store in Benglauru.

Audience for Nintendo Switch Games at 4K ’Too Limited’: Nintendo

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Nintendo thinks the audience for 4K gaming hasn't hit critical mass
  • It likens the delay for the Switch online service to Breath of the Wild
  • The company wants its online service to have all features when it hits
The Nintendo Switch is one of the more popular consoles at the moment with demand outstripping supply by a large margin. So much so that Nintendo is contending with Apple for components to make the Switch.
Nonetheless, unlike the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X, the company isn’t touting content at 4K. According to Nintendo America boss Reggie Fils-Aime, this has to do with targeting a larger potential consumer base.
“The Nintendo mission is to reach as many consumers as possible and to have them engage and have fun with our intellectual property. That’s what we try and do. So inherently, we go for a more mainstream audience. Inherently, we want our products to be affordable. We want our products to be easy to pick up and experience, low learning curve. We want our IP to shine as we deliver these experiences,” Fils-Aime said in conversation with The Verge (via Go Nintendo) during E3 2017.

For Nintendo, the audience for 4K content is ‘too limited.’
“That’s the way we approach it. And so, what that means is, a sweet spot of $300 for the Nintendo Switch, a platform that has Mario and Zelda and Splatoon. Going against a more limited consumer pool, a higher price point, requiring investments in other ways — 4K TVs, what have you — that is a strategy that for us, candidly, is a bit too limited.”
Furthermore, he also shed light on Nintendo’s approach to online with the Nintendo Switch, comparing it to the delay for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

“The reason we’ve delayed the full paid subscription, is we want to make sure that as we get all of our learnings, and we build all of the elements, that we launch something that is robust for the consumer. And as they consider a $20 price point, they say ‘This is a no-brainer. This is something that I absolutely need to participate in given the full range of features that it provides.’
That’s why we’re delaying it, and it really is consistent with the overall Nintendo development philosophy. We want, when we launch it, for it to be great for the consumer. And not to be something that isn’t fully-featured and fully-capable. That’s why we delayed Breath of the Wild — and look at what we were able to finally launch.”

Sony Isn’t Announcing the PS5 Anytime Soon; PS4 Pro Exclusive Games ‘Will Never Happen’

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Sony has said it will "probably be some time" before we see the PS5
  • This comes after speculation that the PS5 could be out next year
  • It also clarified there won't be any PS4 Pro exclusive games
The PS5, PlayStation 5, or whatever Sony decides to call its next console isn’t going to be revealed soon.  In an E3 2017 interview with Golem.de (translated by VG247) Sony President and CEO Shawn Layden has said it would “probably be some time” before the reveal of the PS5.
In addition to this, Layden categorically denied that we’d see any PS4 Pro exclusive titles. He stated that it “will never happen!”
“With the Playstation 4 Pro we have for the first time implemented this kind of innovation within the life cycle of a console,” said Layden.
“The Pro is really only to offer advantages such as 4K resolutions and HMD for players who can and want to use that. Add to this a more stable image rate and larger hard disk space. But [PS4 owners have] no real disadvantages. Each of our games will continue to run on the classic PS4 and possibly slightly better on the Pro.”

While its heartening to know that Sony is sticking to its policies for the PS4 and PS4 Pro - allowing a shared library of games, it’s Layden’s comment on the PS5 that undoubtedly garners more attention.
Reason being, this comes after Macquarie Capital Securities analyst Damian Thong predicted that Sony could release the PS5 in 2018.

His prediction was cited in a Wall Street Journal report on Sony’s recent financial earnings wherein it came to light that the company shipped 60 million PS4s.

In the past, Thong correctly suggested that Sony would release the PS4 Slim and PS4 Pro, which lends some credence to his statements this time around.
Though we can’t help but feel that this would be a bit premature. Reason being the PS4 Pro just released in 2016 — launching a new console, belonging to the same generation as the PS4 or otherwise seems unwise. More so considering how well the PS4 is selling, tracking in line with Sony’s most successful console, the PS2.

NASA Reacts to Anonymous Video, Says No Pending Announcement on Alien Life

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Anonymous posted a YouTube video stating NASA may have alien info
  • NASA has denied any further information on aliens as of yet
  • NASA earlier announced TRAPPIST-1 planetary system alike ours
US space agency NASA said that it has no pending announcement regarding extraterrestrial life, following a wave of media reports that it was about to announce the evidence of alien life.
Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator for the agency's Science Mission Directorate, on Monday denied the reports andconfirmed that NASA scientists are still looking for proof of alien life, reports Xinhua news agency.
"Are we alone in the universe? While we do not know yet, we have missions moving forward that may help answer that fundamental question," he tweeted.
The wave of media reports emerged after hacking group Anonymous posted a 12-minute video on YouTube, in which a man wearing a mask in a clear synthesised voice said that at a Congressional hearing in April, Zurbuchen had said: "Our civilisation is on the verge of discovering evidence of alien life in the cosmos."
"Taking into account all of the different activities and missions that are specifically searching for evidence of alien life we are on the verge of making one of the most profound and unprecedented discoveries in history," the masked man quoted Zurbuchen as saying.
The video, which also touches on the latest discovery regarding Earth-size planets circling the star TRAPPIST-1 and several supposed UFO sightings, has so far been watched by more than 1 million viewers.

NASA's Cassini Probe Captures Dawn on Saturn in Stunning New Image

HIGHLIGHTS

  • NASA's Cassini shot image of Saturn's sunlit atmosphere with icy rings
  • The image was taken in green light with Cassini's wide-angle camera
  • The view was obtained at a distance of about one million kilometres
NASA's Cassini spacecraft has beamed
back a stunning image that shows a sliver
of Saturn's sunlit atmosphere with its icy
rings stretched across the foreground as a
 dark band.
The Cassini mission is currently executing
a series of daring ring-grazing dives as the mission comes closer to the culmination of its
epic 20-year-long journey in space. The new image captures the un-illuminated side of the
rings from about seven degrees below the ring plane.
The image was taken in green light with the Cassini spacecraft wide-angle camera on March 31. The view was obtained at a distance of about one million kilometres from Saturn.

After executing 22 dives between the planet's icy rings, the spacecraft will plunge into
Saturn's atmosphere.
The finale orbits bring the spacecraft closer to Saturn than ever before, providing stunning
, high-resolution images and new insights into the planet's interior structure and the
origins of the rings, NASA said.
During its final plunge into Saturn on September 15, Cassini will send data about the a
tmosphere's composition until its signal is lost.
Earlier this week, NASA revealed its Opportunity Mars rover is examining the edge
of a crater on the red planet that may once have been a lake of liquid water.
The Opportunity rover found rocks at the edge of Endeavour Crater that were either
transported by a flood or eroded in place by wind.
The features were seen just outside the crater rim's crest above "Perseverance Valley,"
which is carved into the inner slope of the rim.

Samsung Galaxy Note 7 Refurbished Units to Start Selling Next Week: Reports

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Samsung to reportedly start selling refurbished Galaxy Note 7 from July 7
  • It is said to be called Galaxy Note Fandom Edition (FE)
  • The refurbished handsets will be priced below KRW 700,000 ($616)
The world's biggest smartphone maker Samsung will next week start reselling refurbished Galaxy Note 7 devices after a humiliating recall over exploding batteries last year, news reports said Tuesday.
Samsung Electronics declined to comment on the reports.
The recall debacle cost the Korean giant billions of dollars in lost profits and hammered its global credibility.
Around three million Galaxy Note 7 devices were returned to the firm, but campaign groups including Greenpeace expressed concern that discarding them could harm the environment.
Citing industry sources, South Korea's Yonhap news agency and other news reports said Samsung would start selling refurbished devices with new batteries and updated software under the name Galaxy Note Fandom Edition (FE).
They will be priced below KRW 700,000 ($616 or roughly Rs. 40,000) and sales are slated to start July 7, Yonhap said.
The recall was deeply embarrassing for Samsung but it has just launched a new flagship device, the Galaxy S8, to positive reviews and strong orders.
In April it posted its biggest quarterly net profit for more than three years, although it has come under pressure on wider fronts.
Lee Jae-Yong, the Samsung group vice-chairman and heir to its leadership, is on trial for bribery in connection with the sprawling corruption scandal that brought down former South Korean president Park Geun-Hye.
Lee is accused of bribing Park and her secret confidante Choi Soon-Sil with millions of dollars to seek government favours.
He has effectively been at the helm of the group since his father suffered a heart attack in 2014. His indictment in February sent shockwaves through the firm and triggered the announcement of a major reform of its top-down management style.

WhatsApp for Android Gets Photo Bundling, Refreshed Call Screen

HIGHLIGHTS

  • We don't yet see the new features, despite being on the beta
  • Users can now share media files as a bundle, reports claim
  • WhatsApp call screen is said to have been refreshed as well
Last week, WhatsApp slowly started rolling out the ability to share files of any type, and now, users of the Android beta report that one new feature (media bundling) has been added alongside one aesthetic change (a new call screen).
As per a report by Android Police, WhatsApp beta for Android users are reporting seeing a change in the way photo bundles will be shown to the sender and recipient. WhatsApp users can now send a bunch of photos to their friends, who will receive them bundled as an album and not as before, one after another. The feature rolled out to iPhone earlier this month, and refines the sharing of multiple photos on the platform. One the album is opened, all images are shown on a single page. The feature also indicates that WhatsApp will give more room for shared photos.

The new update also brings minor change to the WhatsApp call screen where users will now have to swipe up  (seen below) instead of sideways to pick up a call.
Running the latest WhatsApp for Android beta, we see the above two features. Android Police reports that the ability to share any file type is slowly rolling out to stable users of the app, and notably, we have also received the feature.

To recall, last week, WhatsApp was reported to be rolling support for sharing of all types of files(including archives) on Android, iPhone, and Windows Phone with a limited number of users, removing any hindrance of file sharing on WhatsApp.

Apple Acquires SensoMotoric, a German Firm Specialising in Eye-Tracking Tech

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Apple CEO Tim Cook has previously talked about potential of AR
  • The company announced ARKit at WWDC 2017
  • Apple has not officially confirmed the acquisition
If Apple's announcement of ARKit at WWDC 2017 was not proof enough for company's dedication towards augmented reality, it has now acquired a computer vision company that specialises in augmented reality. As per the latest information, Apple has acquired German company SensoMotoric Instruments, which provides eye-tracking solutions.
While a MacRumors report first suggested that the company has acquired SensoMotoric Instruments, the Cupertino-based company gave Axios its standard boilerplate statement: "Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans." While Apple almost never officially discloses acquisitions to public, this standard response can be seen as a confirmation.
As SensoMotoric Instruments provides eye-tracking technology, which plays a key role in the development of augmented reality applications, it is clear that Apple might be focusing heavily on this area going ahead.
However, this should not come as a surprise to anyone who has been tracking news regarding the company currently headed by Tim Cook in last two year. Tim Cook himself has openly made several statements where he has talked about the potential that augmented reality holds.
As we mentioned, Apple introduced ARKit along with the announcement of iOS 11 at WWDC 2017. The ARKit provides fast and stable motion tracking, ambient light estimation and so on which is made possible by using the sensors in the iPhone and iPad devices. "This will make ARKit the largest AR platform in the world," Craig Federighi said at the event.
As there is no official information available from the company's side, currently it is unclear what Apple is planning to do with its new acquisition. However, we can now expect the company to make an announcement regarding its augmented reality efforts sometime in the near future.

Samsung Galaxy S8, S8+ Bixby Voice feature starts rolling out to users in the US

NEW DELHI: Samsungdebuted its Bixbyartificial assistant with its flagship smartphones -- Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus. The company also showcased one of the features of the AI known as Bixby Voice, which allows users to carry out certain tasks using voice commands. However, at the time of the smartphone's release, the South Korean tech firm said that the particular feature is not yet available to the masses and will be rolling out soon. Now, it looks like the company has already started rolling out the feature to some users.

The Bixby Voice feature has started rolling out for Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+ users in the United States. The feature for now is limited to those who signed up for the Bixby Early Access Program. Unfortunately, interested fans won't be able to sign up for the Bixby Early Access Program as Samsung has closed the registering process.

t is said that to make the Bixby Voice feature work properly, users would have to keep all their apps up to date. Since Samsung has rolled out the beta version of the Bixby Voice feature, it could take some time to roll it out to all the Galaxy S8, S8+ customers. It can bring the feature sometime in July.

Samsung, at the time of the launch of the Galaxy S8 smartphones, claimed that Bixby can do much more than its rivals, including being able to handle any smartphone-related task that is managed by touch. The voice assistant will initially be integrated with Samsung's native applications including Camera, Contacts, Gallery, Messages and Settings.

Samsung recently announced that it will launch its next flagship phablet Galaxy Note 8 in August this year. A report from Reuters adds that the phablet is likely to have a curved screen that is slightly bigger than the 6.2-inch screen version of the Galaxy S8. It has also been mentioned that the smartphone will sport dual-rear cameras.

Apple contractors' employees held for selling data in China

BEIJING: Chinese police have arrested 16 employees of an Applecontractor for selling personal information of iPhone users from eastern China's Zhejiang Province.

In January, police in Cangnan county Zhejiang Provincesuspected several employees or former employees of an Apple distributor and a contractor of stealing user data, the county procuratorate said in a statement today.

In May, police caught 22 people, 20 of whom worked for the two companies, from Guangdong, Jiangsu and Fujian provinces, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

So far, 16 people have been arrested and four remain under investigation.

Fifteen of those arrested work for Guangzhou Telecom Yingke Company, a contractor which provides consulting and after-sales service for Apple.

Prosecutors said that starting from August 2013, the chief suspects Yang, Li and Gan used their internal system to illegally check personal information of iPhone users.

They illegally obtained names, telephone numbers, email accounts and addresses of Apple customers.

In July, 2014, they were fired by the company, but continued to collude with company staff to steal information until August 2016.

Each item of information was sold at 10 to 180 yuan (USD 26.24).

Preliminary investigation showed that they made about 50 million yuan (about USD 7.35 million) of illegal profit.

Toshiba willing to talk with spurned Western Digital about chip unit sale

TOKYO: Toshiba Corpsaid it was open to talks with Western DigitalCorp in their dispute over the sale of the Japanese conglomerate's prized chip unit - an apparent olive branch after it chose another suitor as preferred bidder.

The two have been feuding bitterly and Western Digital, which jointly runs Toshiba's main semiconductor plant, has sought a U.S. court injunction to prevent any deal that does not have its consent.

The softer tone from Toshiba comes on a day of further indignities as the crisis-wracked conglomerate saw itself demoted to the second section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange and estimated bigger losses for the past financial year.

This week it chose a consortium of Bain Capital and Japanese government investors as preferred bidder for the unit, the world's No. 2 producer of NAND flash chips. It wants to clinch a deal, worth some $18 billion, by June 28, the day of its shareholders meeting.

"Western Digital used to be a good partner, so we want to continue talks. I'm disappointed with the current dispute," Toshiba CEO Satoshi Tsunakawa told a news conference, adding it was important that they joined forces to better compete against bigger rival Samsung Electronics.

"We want Western Digital to jointly invest to fight against Samsung. It will be so disappointing if we can't do so because of the dispute," he said.

But in a sign that tensions were still high, Tsunakawa also said Toshiba was not going to be the first to propose the U.S. firm join the consortium and it was still considering whether to block Western Digital employees not based at the plant from accessing joint venture data servers.

Tsunakawa also said he did not expect any changes to the make-up of the consortium before June 28.

Western Digital's offer had not found favour on price and because the U.S. firm wanted to take control of the unit, he said, adding that he expected executives from Toshiba to still be running operations after the sale.

His comments come after sources familiar with matter said earlier this week that the Bain consortium members had made resolving the dispute with Western Digital a condition of their investment.

Representatives for Western Digital were not immediately available to comment.

HYNIX HURDLES?
South Korean chipmaker SK Hynix Inc is also part of the Bain consortium and its membership has raised concerns that the winning bid may find it difficult to clear anti-trust reviews.

Its presence has made Western Digital reluctant to join the group in its current form due to worries that high-level technology for NAND chips, which provide long-term data storage, could be leaked to its rival, sources familiar with the matter have said.

But Tsunakawa said SK Hynix would not be holding any equity and would not be involved in management - an arrangement that was unlikely to raise regulatory red flags and would prevent leaks of key technology information.

SK Hynix, which is relatively weak in NAND flash memory chips, has said it has joined the group because it sees new business opportunities. It will provide half of the 850 billion yen ($7.6 billion) that Bain plans to put up in the form of financing, sources have said.

Earlier in the day, Toshiba flagged a net loss of around $9 billion for the year ended in March with negative shareholders' equity of around $5.2 billion, both worse than expected on an increase in liabilities at bankrupt nuclear unit Westinghouse and potential legal damages.

With negative shareholder equity confirmed, the Tokyo Stock Exchange said it would move Toshiba's listing to the second section of the bourse from Aug. 1 - the latest in a series of humiliating developments since December for a firm that has been in business for more than 140 years.

Toshiba also received regulatory approval to delay filing its annual earnings by more than a month amid a prolonged accounting investigation at Westinghouse. It is the sixth time since 2015 that Toshiba has delayed an earnings filing.

Regulators have now given Toshiba until Aug. 10 instead of June 30 to submit the filing. Failure to gain an extension would have put the troubled company's stock exchange listing in further jeopardy, although it still needs to dig itself out of negative shareholders' equity by the end of this financial year to stay listed.

Google will no longer read your email to serve you ads

Googlehas announced that it will stop scanning the inboxes of Gmails free users for ad personalization at some point later this year.

Diane Greene, Google's Senior Vice President for Google Cloud, said the company made this decision because it "brings Gmail ads in line with how we personalize ads for other Google products", Tech Crunch reported on Friday.

Google already doesn't do this for business users who subscribe to its G Suiteservices, but until now, it routinely scanned the inboxes of its free users to better target ads for them. It then combined that information with everything else it knows about its users to build its advertising profiles for them.

Samsung Technical School – A CSR Initiative We care for child

10+ advanced formatting tips for Word users

Formatting improves the readability of your documents and often provides visual clues to the document's purpose. It's an important part of most every document and users often spend a great deal of time applying formats. These tips will help you work more efficiently and judicially when applying formats.

1: Copy defaults

When copying content from another source, even another Word document, Word retains the source formatting by default. You can eliminate subsequent formatting by applying the destination document's default style during the copy process as follows:
  1. Copy the content from the source to the Clipboard using [Ctrl]+C (or some other route).
  2. In the destination document, position the cursor and then click the Home tab (in Ribbon versions).
  3. In the Clipboard group, choose the Keep Text Only option shown in Figure A from the Paste drop-down. In Word 2003, choose the Keep Text Only option from the Paste Options (smart tag) drop-down after pasting the content.

Figure A

The Keep Text Only option applies the destination document's default style to copied content.
Changing the default, as follows might be more efficient:
  1. Click the File tab and choose Options (under Help). In Word 2007, click the Office button and then click Word Options. Choose Advanced in the left pane.
  2. In the Cut, Copy, and Paste section, choose the appropriate option. For example, you might want to retain source formatting when copying from other Word documents, but not Web sites.
  3. Click OK.
In Word 2003, choose Options from the Tools menu and click the Edit tab. You can uncheck the Smart Cut And Paste option or click the Settings button to customize the feature.

2: Insert section breaks

Dividing a document into sections lets you customize formats for a section's content and purpose. For instance, you might want a single page to be in landscape in the middle of a portrait document. Or you might want the header text or page numbering scheme to change for several pages. Using sections, you can apply different formatting as needed.
To insert a section break, click the Page Layout tab and choose a Breaks option in the Page Setup group:
  • Next Page: Starts the new section on the next page.
  • Continuous: Starts the new section on the same page.
  • Even Page: Starts the new section on the next even-numbered page.
  • Odd Page: Starts the new section on the next odd-numbered page.
In Word 2003, choose Break from the Insert menu.
Choosing Next Page creates a problem because Word also inserts a page break. If you don't want a page break, choose Continuous.
For quicker formatting, copy section breaks when formats are identical or similar. Then, tweak as necessary rather than starting from scratch each time. Figure B shows a selected section marker after enabling Show/Hide in the Paragraph group (on the Home tab; in Word 2003, it's on the Standard toolbar). To delete a section, select its code and press [Delete].

Figure B

Display formatting codes to select a section break.

3: Keep it together

To keep two or more words together on the same line, insert a nonbreaking space character between them by pressing [Ctrl]+[Shift]+[Spacebar] instead of inserting a regular space character. The space will look the same, but Word will keep the two words on the same line.
A nonbreaking hyphen works the same as a nonbreaking space but with hyphenated words. If you don't want Word to wrap at a hyphen character, enter a nonbreaking hyphen by pressing [Ctrl]+[Shift]+[-]. When the hyphenated word reaches the right margin, Word will wrap the entire word to the next line if necessary rather than breaking at the hyphen.

4: Format a list

Formatting just the number component in a numbered list is a bit tricky. You usually end up formatting the entire item or list, unless you know this simple trick:
  1. On the Home tab, click Show/Hide in the Paragraph group. In Word 2003, click Show/Hide on the Formatting toolbar.
  2. Select only the Paragraph mark at the end of the line.
  3. With the paragraph mark selected, apply formats. As you can see in Figure C, only the 2 changed color because we selected only the paragraph mark for that item.

Figure C

Selecting the paragraph mark is the key to formatting only the item's number.
To format more than one number, but not all of them, hold down the [Ctrl] key while selecting markers. To format all of the numbers in the list, without changing the format of the actual text, click any number in the list to highlight all of the numbers. Word will extend the format to new items. Formats applied to the entire list will take precedence over formats applied via the paragraph marker.

5: Remove formats

Removing formats isn't hard, but there's more than one way to get the job done. When you want to remove a single format, you probably select the text and click the appropriate option; most of them work as toggles. You might display the Format dialog and uncheck options when you need to delete more than one format.
If you want to strip all of the formatting, there's a quicker method: Select the text and press [Ctrl]+[Spacebar]. This shortcut removes all the character formatting except what's defined by the underlying style. To remove just the paragraph formats, press [Ctrl]+Q.

6: Keep styles from updating

Word lets you update a style when you add formatting to text. This behavior can be troublesome if users don't understand it, so you might want to disable it as follows:
  1. Click the Home tab.
  2. Launch the Styles dialog. In Word 2003, click the Styles And Formatting tool on the Formatting toolbar.
  3. Find the style.
  4. Choose Modify from the style's drop-down or right-click the style.
  5. Uncheck the Automatically Update option shown in Figure D. (This option isn't available with Word's default style, Normal.)

Figure D

Disable a style's automatic updating behavior to protect styles.
By default, Word doesn't set this option for built-in styles, but users often accidentally enable the feature. Don't enable this behavior when basing a new style on an existing style or creating a new one unless you have a specific reason to do so.

7: Adjust the default line spacing

Word 2007 and 2010 use a 1.15 line spacing setting. That's great if you publish a lot of content to the Web. If not, you can change the default to 1 as follows:
  1. Click the Home tab.
  2. Right-click Normal in the Styles Quick gallery and choose Modify.
  3. Choose Paragraph from the Format list.
  4. In the Spacing section, change the At setting from 1.15 to 1, as shown in Figure E.
  5. Click OK.
  6. Check the New Documents Based On This Template option. If you don't want to change the template, skip this step.
  7. Click OK.

Reset the default Line Spacing option to 1.

8: Eliminate extra paragraph spacing

Another change to the latest versions is the increased spacing between paragraphs. It's not a blank line that you could easily delete. If you don't like that much space, you can modify it as follows:
  1. Click the Home tab.
  2. Click the Paragraph group's dialog launcher (the small arrow in the lower-right corner).
  3. Check the Don't Add Space Between Paragraphs Of The Same Style option.
  4. Click Set As Default, as shown in Figure F.
  5. Click OK.

Use this setting to reduce extra white space between paragraphs.

9: Save formatted text as AutoCorrect entries

AutoCorrect reduces data entry and corrects typos, but it can also apply formatting. Simply save the appropriately formatted text as an AutoCorrect entry, as follows:
  1. Enter and format the text. For instance, enter Backyard Wilderness and italicize it as a title.
  2. Select the formatted text.
  3. Click the File menu, choose Options, and then click Proofing in the left pane. In Word 2007, click the Office button, click Word Options, and then choose Proofing in the left pane. In Word 2003, choose AutoCorrect Options from the Tools menu.
  4. Click the AutoCorrect Options button in the AutoCorrect Options section. (Skip this step in Word 2003.)
  5. Word will fill the With control with the selected (and formatted) title.
  6. Click the Formatted Text option.
  7. Enter bw in the Replace control, as shown in Figure G.
  8. Click Add.
  9. Click OK twice (just once in Word 2003).

To insert the formatted title, type bw.

10: Use Find And Replace to change formatting

You probably use Word's Find And Replace feature to replace characters, but you can use it to change formatting. For example, you might want to change all instances of bold to italics, as follows:
  1. Press [Ctrl]+H.
  2. Click the Find What control and click More.
  3. From the Format drop-down, choose Font.
  4. Select Bold in the Font Style list and click OK.
  5. Click the Replace With control and click More.
  6. From the Format drop-down, choose Font.
  7. Select Italics in the Font Style list and click OK. As you can see in Figure H, Word displays the specified formats under both controls.
  8. Click Replace All.

Figure H

Replace one format with another using the Replace option.
You can use Replace to remove an unwanted format by leaving the Replace With control empty. Or you can quickly format all occurrences of the same text by entering that text in the Find control. For more ways to use these options, see 10 cool ways to get more from Word's Find and Replace feature.

11: Eliminate sticky borders

If you type three hyphens and press [Enter], Word will replace them with a solid line that extends from the left to the right margin. Sometimes this line sticks to the text or the bottom of the page no matter what you do to try to delete it. This happens when you enter the three hyphens directly under text; Word attaches the border as a paragraph format.
To quickly remove this sticky border, click inside the paragraph and choose No Border, as shown in Figure I, from the Border drop-down in the Paragraph group. In Word 2003, this option's on the Formatting toolbar.
