Google Pixel 2 Will Arrive Later This Year, Stick to Premium Segment: Rick Osterloh Google Pixel 2 Will Arrive Later This Year, Stick to Premium Segment: Rick Osterloh

Google Pixel 2 Will Arrive Later This Year, Stick to Premium Segment: Rick Osterloh

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Rick Osterloh confirms that Pixel 2 is coming this year
  • It is expected to stay in the Premium segment
  • Google to follow the annual rhythm in the industry for launch
Google's newly appointed hardware lead Rick Osterloh was at MWC 2017 and spoke to a few journalists out there divulging some details on the newly launched Pixel brand. After the Chromebook Pixel series statement, Osterloh is now reportedly talking about the next Pixel smartphone. In a roundtable, he said the Pixel was not a one-off experiment, and that a successor is in the offing.
Speaking to Android Pit's Eric Hermann, Osterloh said that next-gen Pixel devices are coming this year, although no time frame was announced. "There is an annual rhythm in the industry. So, you can count on us to follow it. You can (also) count on a successor this year, even if you don't hear a date from me now," he told Hermann.
This means that, like Apple, Google will also follow the pattern of releasing its smartphone after the one-year cycle is over. Last year's Pixel devices were launched in October, and we can expect the same launch time frame this year as well. Furthermore, Osterloh also refuted all claims of an affordable Pixel smartphone in the offing, and said that the Pixel will be positioned in the premium segment. Some reports even claim that the Pixel 2 will be more expensive than original Pixel smartphones.
Google appointed ex-Motorola employee Osterloh to helm all the hardware work for Pixel. While the Pixel devices got a decent review, there have been numerous glitches that have been reported by early adopters, and new bugs keep cropping up even now.
With the Pixel 2, Osterloh and his team is expected to bring upgrades and reduce these bugs. Further, the Pixel 2 is tipped to come with an improved camera and processor, and be water resistant as well.

LeEco Confirms Layoffs and Departure of Top Executives, Says It Isn't Exiting India

    LeEco Confirms Layoffs Exiting India
  • LeEco confirms it's not exiting India
  • It is launching a next-gen TV in the market soon
  • Premium smartphone models will also launch this year
In a recent development, LeEco was reported to have laid off 85 percent of its staff and that it may quit its operations in India. However, the company tells Gadgets 360 that it has no plans to exit the market, though it did confirm layoffs, calling it an "optimisation exercise" . It also confirmed the exit of the COOs of two verticals. The company claims that "India is one of the most strategic markets for LeEco", and that it is only changing its strategy from "fast market expansion to healthy and sustainable growth". LeEco also stated that it will launch its next-generation TV in the coming week.
LeEco says that it plans to introduce several products in the Indian market this year, in the TV to smartphone segement, and that it is even going to invest in marketing initiatives as well. "Contrary to reports in certain sections of the media, LeEco has a healthy product pipeline for India this year. In fact, the company is gearing up for the launch of its next-generation TV scheduled in the coming week. Premium models of smartphones too are to follow. LeEco television and smartphone business continues in India and has gained significant market recognition. All this certainly does not signal a company in wind-up mode," LeEco told Gadgets 360 in a statement.
The company however does acknowledge a shift in business strategy, and an "optimisation" of workforce. LeEco also confirms that two senior management executives from the company have resigned, COO of Smart Electronics Business Atul Jain and COO of Internet Applications Debashish Ghosh. Gadgets 360 has learnt that several other employees have also effectively resigned from the company, but the 85 percent layoff reported cannot be confirmed.
Playing down these resignations, LeEco said that in India it "continues to operate with a very experienced team comprising senior team leaders and business heads." It adds, "The resource head count in India is well aligned to the scale of operations envisioned and in line with industry benchmarks. Moreover, LeEco India has a robust R&D team working for India as well as LeEco globally, as the company values the R&D function, as it is integral to long-term business. "
Talking further about the motivations for the layoffs, LeEco further says in its statement, "The company's recent moves were well thought out and planned as part of a longer-term strategy for the Indian market, and not triggered by the purported slump in sales due to demonetisation."
In December, LeEco had confirmed layoffs and had touched on the revamped strategy as well. "As we transit to a more strategic phase of our operations in India, it is the appropriate time to assess and take steps to ensure the sustainability and profitability of our business," the company told Gadgets 360 then, a statement it reiterated again on Friday for the motivation behind its "optimisation exercise".
The company is seeing a tough phase financially by expanding too fast in various markets, and burning out cash too quickly. Last year LeEco's founder and chairman Jia Yueting had also said that his company was facing financial obstacles due to the rapid pace of growth in various businesses.
However, in January, LeEco managed to secure a new round of investment worth CNY 15.04 billion ($2.2 billion or roughly Rs. 14,856 crores) from property developer Sunac China Holdings giving it some breathing space hopefully.
To recall, LeEco entered the Indian market in in January last year via the online-only route, and entered the offline market in June, before proceeding to further expand its retail partnerships.

Samsung Galaxy S8 Leaked in New Images Showing On-Screen Keys, and More

HIGHLIGHTS

  • New Galaxy S8 leaked image purportedly again shows iris scanner
  • The new on-screen keys are visible at the front
  • The fingerprint scanner at the back is seen in new leaked images
We may be over a month away from Samsung's next Galaxy flagship smartphone launch but there's no dearth of leaks related to the upcoming flagship. We were recently treated to a flurry of live images claiming to show the Galaxy S8 in its full glory, and now a new bunch of leaked images have yet again made their way to the Internet. The new leaked images show the all-new navigation on-screen buttons.
The new Samsung Galaxy S8 leaked image has been posted by a Twitter user Benjamin Geskin and clearly shows the front panel with switched on screen. The iris scanner can be seen placed above the display alongside the front-facing camera. The new leaked image again shows that the upcoming Galaxy S8 will indeed sport a refreshed look with near bezel-less display with a revamped on-screen keys. The leaked image also shows some of the apps that will come preloaded on the Galaxy S8 including Amazon Kindle, Samsung Gear, My Knox, My Galaxy, and Microsoft suite of apps among others.
Additionally, some new leaked images from China claim to show the Galaxy S8+ variant that is widely expected to debut alongside the Galaxy S8. The leaked images were posted by a tipster on Weibo and claimed to show the Galaxy S8+ while being used by a user. Unfortunately, the phone seems to be surrounded by a case that blocks side-panels. Another Twitter user from China has posted images of the Galaxy S8 purportedly showing the handset in a Jet Black colour, and also showing the fingerprint scanner will be present at the back.
Separately, Android Police has received an alleged system dump from the company's upcoming Galaxy Tab S3, which is expected to debut at MWC 2017 next week, showing some of the new features of the Galaxy S8. The animated images show the fingerprint scanner placement on the Galaxy S8 which is likely to be placed right next to the primary camera.
Samsung's Galaxy S8 is likely to have multiple-city launch on March 29 while the handset is expected to go on sale from April 14.

Twitter Hacks, Lenovo Tech World, and More News This Week

Twitter Hacks, Lenovo Tech World, and More News This Week
It's been a big week in tech news, though next week is going to be a huge one as well, thanks to Apple's WWDC which will take place on Monday night India time. This week though, the big news of the week probably was about Twitter getting hacked - the company denied reports of a system breach that exposed the passwords of 32 million users. Though Twitter denied a hack, the company has locked passwords of users whose accounts might have been exposed, requiring password resets. Earlier this week, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg's Pinterest and Twitter accounts were hacked after hackers allegedly obtained his credentials from a LinkedIn breach in 2012. Twitter co-founder Ev Williams' account was also reportedly hacked, among other high profile accounts.
The moral of this story is exceedingly clear - don't reuse passwords, use strong passwords, change them frequently, and use a password manager like LastPass or 1Password.
There's a lot more happening this week, and you can catch up with it all below, and as always, check out our Orbital Podcast - this week, we're talking about FIFA 16 and PES 2016.
One of the big events of this week was Lenovo's Tech World 2016. Lenovo showcased a lot of cool stuff at the launch, and after a couple of years of phones being mostly the same, we got to see some really cool ideas. For one, Lenovo showcased a foldable phone that could transform from smartphone into wearable, and it also showed off the Lenovo Phab 2 Pro, the first Google Tango phone.
This phone uses Google's Project Tango technology, which uses sensors to track motions and map building interiors. This technology could really change the way we interact with our devices. And if that wasn't enough, Motorola showed the Moto Z and Moto Z Force with Moto Mods, its take on modular phones. Like the LG G5, the phone can be augmented with mods which can be bought separately and swapped out to meet your needs - mods include speakers, a battery pack, and a projector - and the company wants third parties to develop their own mods.

LeEco launched a couple of phones in India, specifically the Le 2 and Le Max. Another launch this week is the Lava X81 with 4G LTE support; there's also the Oppo A59, yet another new phone with VoLTE support. And if you're an Asus ZenFone 2 Laser or Asus ZenFone Max user, then good news, your phone will soon get the Android Marshmallow update. The Lyf Wind 5 VoLTE phone was also launched this week, as was the Lava x46 with VoLTE support, and the Intex Cloud Glory 4G launched at Rs. 3,999 It's becoming clear that 4G and VoLTE isn't a high-end feature anymore, and is quickly becoming the norm.
There were a couple of other launches this week, but nothing really caught our eye as much as LG's Mosquito Away TV series - televisions that can apparently drive the mosquitoes out of your home.
Since WWDC starts Monday, we've got a lot of reports coming about what Apple will announce. It seems that iMessage might go multiplatform. There are also reports that Apple will launch a new MacBook Air, and more details have emerged about the Apple Watch 2 and iPhone 7. Right now, it's also looking likely that OS X is going to be rebranded as macOS.
Facebook has been a big backer of virtual reality ever since it acquired Oculus in 2014, and the company has now brought 360-degree photos to the News Feed, which can be seen in virtul reality on compatible devices. Oh and just in case you maybe felt there weren't enough videos all over Facebook? Well, good news! You can now post videos as comments, from Android, iOS, or the Web. The social network is also taking on Twitch and YouTube with live game streaming.

Microsoft set up a cyber security center in Gurgaon, something the company had first talked about in December, saying it would be used to protect India's critical infrastructure. The Department of Telecom has decided that all phones must get a panic button - as a software feature for existing phones as well. And the Home Ministry denied permission to Google for Street View. This follows on news about the draft bill for maps data that the Home Ministry had talked about, which could have a major negative impact on any number of companies that we've all come to depend upon.
Meanwhile, after Xiaomi reportedly withdrew an application for waiving local sourcing requirements for setting up retail stores, and the same was rejected in the case of Apple, Chinese smartphone maker LeEco is the latest brand to seek exemption from this requirement on the grounds of being cutting edge technology. And while we don't know what the eventual outcome is going to be, for foreign companies, India remains an attractive market, as Amazon increased it's investment here to $5 billion.
As usual, we got up early on Monday to catch up to the latest from Game of Thrones, and apparently the season finale is going to be the longest in the series yet. We've still got three episodes to go this year, and hopefully, the next book in the series will come out before Season 7 starts. Netflix announced its first original series from India, based on the novel Sacred Games, and we also played the mobile game based on Salman Khan starrer Sultan. It's not bad, but could be better, we felt. The Warcraft movie isn't looking too promising sadly, so it's not the best week for games based on movies, or movies based on games. We also tried out a leaked build of the canceled PSP port of The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion and it really seems unfortunate that the game got canceled, based on this experience.

With E3 around the corner it's no surprise that there's some interesting gaming news to catch up on. Destiny: Rise of Iron now has a release date although gamers who have the game on the PS3 or Xbox 360 will be unhappy to know that they won't be able to buy this expansion. And there's some India specific news too, with pricing for Injustice 2 and Watch Dogs 2 confirmed. In case you're wondering what to expect from E3 2016 we have a few picks, and if the big names don't matter to you, we have some highlights from the non-AAA world too.
