Microsoft says it is cutting 2,850 jobs, about 2.5 percent of its workforce, as it further scales back its troubled smartphone business. A spokeswoman says the layoffs will mostly affect workers in the company’s smartphone hardware operation and related sales teams. She declined to say which geographic locations would be affected but said many of the laid off workers had already been notified.
Microsoft Corp disclosed the planned job cuts in a regulatory filing, which said they’re in addition to 9,250 previous layoffs, primarily affecting the company’s phone business, over the last 12 months.
The giant tech company reported earlier this month that its revenue fell 9 percent in the previous 12 months, but its net income grew 38 percent as it shed unprofitable operations like the phone business.
In May 2016, Microsoft announced plans to further restructure the struggling Lumia smartphone business, which included close to 1,850 job cuts. The new 2,850 job cuts will be in addition to this earlier number that was announced in May.  Microsoft had furthered record an impairment and restructuring charge of approximately $950 million, of which approximately $200 million would relate to severance payments at the time.
“We are focusing our phone efforts where we have differentiation — with enterprises that value security, manageability and our Continuum capability, and consumers who value the same. We will continue to innovate across devices and on our cloud services across all mobile platforms,” Satya Nadella, Microsoft CEO had said at the time.
Microsoft had also recently sold of its remaining feature phone business (which it had acquired when it bought Nokia) to Foxconn subsidiary FIH Mobile Limited (FIH).
Microsoft’s smartphone business has struggled and failed to do well against the might of Android or iOS. The Redmont-based software company hasn’t launched any new products in the smartphone segment for sometime now, and chosen to concentrate on Windows 10 services, Cloud infrastructure, among other things.
However, reports have claimed Microsoft is planning to launch a Surface smartphone. According to a Windows Central report from April 2016, the Surface Phone will come in three different variants based on pricing and markets. and will mean an end for the Lumia line. Meanwhile, Nokia is preparing to release two new smartphones this year. Nokia’s smartphones are to be manufactured by HMD Global, which now holds license to sell Nokia branded smartphones for the next 10 years.

BlackBerry to Offer Enterprise Solutions Using Microsoft's Azure Platform

BlackBerry on Tuesday announced that more of its secure enterprise mobility solutions will utilise the open, flexible, enterprise-grade cloud computing platform Microsoft Azure to run a broad range of business apps.
The move will allow enterprises to install and deploy the "Good Dynamics Secure Mobility Platform" by BlackBerrythrough Microsoft Azure to mobilise a broad range of business apps, including collaboration apps, ISV apps and custom-developed apps.
"With BlackBerry's Good Dynamics now on the Microsoft Azure platform, we continue to help protect customers' data and enhance our ecosystem of business-critical apps," said Steve Guggenheimer, Corporate Vice President, Developer Experience and Evangelism and Chief Evangelist, Microsoft, in a statement.
Since March 2016, enterprises have been able to install and manage their "BES12" deployment through the Microsoft Azure platform.
This means customers have full access to their "BES12" licenses while benefiting from the Microsoft cloud architecture -- without having to invest in their own IT infrastructure.
Good Dynamics is also integrated with "BES12" for secure holistic end-to-end capabilities and is available in the Good Secure EMM Suites from BlackBerry.

YouTube for Android Testing New Comment UI With Likes, Dislikes, and Replies

YouTube for Android Testing New Comment UI With Likes, Dislikes, and Replies

HIGHLIGHTS

  • It also allows users to reply to a comment through the app
  • The feature is still in the testing phase
  • YouTube has also launched mobile live streaming recently
YouTube is looking to revamp the way comments look on its Android app. The company is testing a new UI, which will show likes, dislikes, replies, and even lets you sort them.
A few select users are seeing a new comment UI in YouTube for Android. The new interface now supports likes and dislikes. Essentially it supports all the features that are available on the desktop, including the number of replies a comment has got, and the ability to expand those replies on a separate page.
YouTube for Android currently only shows comments in the order of the time it was posted in - and that's about it. The only thing users could do was add their own comment to the video.
However, Android Police reports that few users are seeing an improved interactive comment UI. It also has a switch that sorts the newest comments on top. The new comment interface is not yet ready for general release, and is just in its initial server-side test phase. If testing is successful, we can expect it to become the norm for all YouTube for Android users.
Just to compare, YouTube for iOS supports likes, and replies. It doesn't have the option to dislike, but does have the sorting toggle to let users choose between newest comments and top comments.
YouTube recently also announced its plans to bring live streaming to Android and iOS. For starting a live video on the smartphone, users will have to tap the big red capture button in the corner, select an image to use as a thumbnail, and then broadcast live to followers. YouTube is already testing this with few YouTube channels like AIB, and plans to do a mass rollout soon.

Science News Missing Craters on Dwarf Planet Ceres Intrigue Scientists

n an intriguing find, scientists associated with Nasa's Dawn spacecraft have discovered a mysterious disappearance of a significant number of large craters on dwarf planet Ceres, indicating something has happened to it.
Nasa's Dawn spacecraft arrived to orbit Ceres in March 2015 and mission scientists expected to find a heavily-cratered body generally resembling the protoplanet Vesta - Dawn's previous port of call.
Instead, as the spacecraft drew near to Ceres, a somewhat different picture began to emerge: Something has happened to Ceres to remove its biggest impact basins.
Now, a team of Dawn scientists led by Simone Marchi from the Southwest Research Institute in Boulder, Colorado suggest that Ceres has experienced significant geological evolution, possibly erasing the large basins.
"We concluded that a significant population of large craters on Ceres has been obliterated beyond recognition over geological time scales, which is likely the result of Ceres' peculiar composition and internal evolution," Marchi explained in a paper published in the journal Nature Communications.
According to David Williams from Arizona State University, "When we first starting looking at Ceres images, we noticed that there weren't any really large impact basins on the surface."
None are larger than 285 km across.
This presents a mystery, he says, because Ceres must have been struck by large asteroids many times over its 4.5-billion-year history.
"Even Vesta, only about half of Ceres' size, has two big basins at its south pole. But at Ceres, all we saw was the Kerwan Basin, just 285 km in diameter," Williams added. "That was a big red flag that something had happened to Ceres."
The team's simulations of collisions with Ceres predicted that it should have 10 to 15 craters larger than 400 km in diameter, and at least 40 craters larger than 100 km wide.
In reality, however, Dawn found that Ceres has only 16 craters larger than 100 km, and none larger than the 285-km Kerwan Basin.
So what removed Ceres' large craters and basins?
"If Ceres were highly rocky, we'd expect impact craters of all sizes to be preserved. Remote sensing from Earth, however, told us even before Dawn arrived that the crust of Ceres holds a significant fraction of ice in some form," Williams explained.
If Ceres' crust contained a large proportion of ice - especially if mixed with salts - that would weaken the crust and let the topography of a large basin relax and become smoother, perhaps even disappear.
In addition, said Williams, Ceres must have generated some internal heat from the decay of radioactive elements after it formed.
This too could also have helped soften or erase large-scale topographic features.
Nasa plans for Dawn to continue orbiting Ceres as the dwarf planet makes its closest approach to the Sun in April 2018.
Scientists want to see if the increasing solar warmth triggers any activity or produces detectable changes in Ceres' surface.

Facebook Now Has Over 1.7 Billion Monthly Active Users

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Facebook has more than one billion daily active users on mobile
  • Quarterly net profit leapt 186 percent from a year ago to $2.05 billion
  • CEO Zuckerberg said a key part of Facebook's strategy was using video

Facebook on Wednesday reported a huge quarterly profit jump fueled by strong growth in revenues and its global user base, powering shares higher for the top social network.
Net profit leapt 186 percent from a year ago to $2.05 billion (roughly Rs. 13,740 crores) in the second quarter, as Facebook blew past most analyst forecasts.
With its global base of monthly active users growing to 1.7 billion, Facebook saw a 59 percent jump in total revenues to $6.4 billion (roughly Rs. 42,897 crores), mostly from online advertising.
Facebook shares jumped 6.3 percent in after-hours trade on the stronger-than-expected results.
"Our business is growing at a healthy rate," Facebook founder and chief executive Mark Zuckerbergtold a conference call, noting that the company has strategic plans for the next five and 10 years.
"Our results show our progress in our goal of making the world more open and connected."
Zuckerberg said a key part of Facebook's strategy was using video, which he said was "at the heart of all our apps and services."
Facebook used video to boost engagement and has drawn considerable interest in its Facebook Live platform that allows any user to stream live video.
Facebook has been dominating the social media space as well as related online advertising as it seeks to diversify into areas such as messaging, virtual reality and other fields.
The research firm eMarketer estimates Facebook is taking in two-thirds of social media ad revenues, trouncing rivals such as Twitter, which this week reported disappointing results.
The number of monthly active users, a key metric for social networks, grew 15 percent from a year ago, Facebook said.
Mobile, mobile and mobileAlmost all of Facebook's revenue, $6.2 billion (roughly Rs. 41,560 crores), came from advertising, and 84 percent of ad revenues came from messages delivered to mobile devices.
Facebook said it had more than one billion daily active users on mobile at the end of the quarter June 30, up 22 percent from a year ago. Monthly active users on mobile grew 20 percent to 1.57 billion.
It ended the quarter with more than $23 billion (roughly Rs. 1,54,173 crores) in cash and cash equivalents.
Zuckerberg said he sees "one of the biggest opportunities" for growth in developing countries, where high-speed Internet is not widely available.
He noted that Facebook is working to expand internet access around the world through a variety of initiatives, including its drone project aimed at bringing online access to underserved areas.
Last week, Facebook announced it had completed the first successful test of its solar-powered Aquila drone, calling it a "major milestone" for the project.
Facebook has been winning plaudits from analysts as it grows its base and extends into new services, including its Instagram photo-sharing service, messaging applications and its Oculus virtual reality gear.
"Facebook remains a top pick for us, given its position as the largest/most engaging mass-reach Internet platform for advertisers, unmatched targeting potential, and very potent monetization formats," said a note this week from Cantor Fitzgerald analysts.
"Mobile has been the main driver of growth to date, video and Instagram should start moving the needle more meaningfully in the second half of 2016."
RBC Capital Markets analysts said in a research note they see room for Facebook to grow further.
"Facebook still has many growth levers left to pull, not least of which is video advertising," the analysts wrote.
Facebook said earlier this month it was ramping up availability of its Oculus virtual reality gear.
Oculus began selling its Rift virtual reality headsets earlier this year for $599, a price that does not include the cost of a computer that can handle the processing and graphics demands of the technology.
Oculus is also increasing inventory at US shops.

Microsoft's Office 365 Updates Bring Along AI-Powered Features

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Word receives research and editing tools to improve your writing
  • Outlook gets Focused Inbox and @mentions with latest update
  • PowerPoint gets Zoom feature that makes way for creative presentations

Microsoft has announced a bunch of useful updates for its applications Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook. The company's new updates are mostly based on artificial intelligence and are likely to improve the utility of all three apps.
The Redmond-based company's latest update adds 'Researcher' service to Microsoft Word, which allows users to search for additional reference material for their work without having to leave the app. The Researcher uses Bing's Knowledge Graph, and suggests research material related to the work that you are doing.
You can also specifically search for something which is not present inside the suggested material. The Researcher is now available for Office 365 subscribers using Word 2016 on Windows desktops.
In order to enhance the quality of your work piece, the company has introduced another feature called 'Editor', which makes suggestions to improve your writing and even recommends using simpler words in place of complex and unclear phrases. The feature will be introduced this fall to Microsoft Word's current spelling and grammar tools.
"Leveraging machine learning and natural language processing-mixed with input from our own team of linguists-Editor makes suggestions to help you improve your writing," the company said in its blog post.
Microsoft also introduced a feature called 'Zoom' for PowerPoint, which allows you to now create interactive and 'non-linear' presentations. With this feature you can create the presentations according to your target audience and allow smooth, effortless navigation in and out of any slide or section, starting from a single interactive summary slide, the company said.
Microsoft also announced updates for Outlook and has now brought the Focused Inbox - which was made available on iOS and Android first - to Windows and Mac versions of the app. This feature basically creates sections within your inbox and keeps the mails that are important in a separate folder. "Outlook's intelligence learns from your behaviour to become even more tailored to your priorities going forward," the company said.
With the latest update, the company has also brought @mentions to the Windows and Mac versions of Outlook for Office 365 to help identify mails that need immediate attention.

Wearables News Pokemon Go Accessory Release Date Pushed to September

IGHLIGHTS

  • The accessory connects to your phone via Bluetooth
  • The wrist accessory vibrates and flashes its LED light for alerts
  • Accessory will help users save their phone's battery life

It will not come as a surprise if future generations classify the history of time with references like 'Pre-Pokemon GoWorld' and 'Post-Pokemon Go World'. The game has captured everyone's attention since its launch earlier this month. However, fans of the franchise will have to wait till September for the wrist accessory that was promised byNintendo at the time of game's announcement.
The Pokemon Go Plus wrist accessory, which connects with your Android or iOS phone, alerts you about in-game events like the presence of PokeStops or Pokemon by vibrating or by flashing an LED light. This bracelet-like accessory was initially scheduled for a release in July but will now be available in September.
The accessory is fairly useful and will help its users save battery-life on their phones and will cost $34.99 (roughly Rs. 2,350).
The delay in the launch of this accessory has been confirmed by Nintendo of Europe and Nintendo of America's Twitter accounts, but the exact reason for the delay has not been specified by either of the accounts.
There is a very good chance that the accessory might have been created in fairly limited numbers but considering the runaway success that the game has seen, a large-scale production might be underway. It could also be a case where the company might have decided to wait till the full rollout of the game is finished before it starts selling the accessory.
However, these are just assumptions and we will only get to know the exact truth when the story fully unfolds and if the company decides to share its production plans.

Samsung's Profit Surges to 2-Year High on Galaxy Phone Sale

Samsung Electronics Co. reported Thursday forecast-beating earnings results that were the best in two years as consumers snapped up its Galaxy smartphones, in a sign the company is getting its mojo back while rivals fail to deliver new smartphones.
The South Korean company forecast that its performance will continue to be "solid" during the rest of the year because demand for its lucrative components, such as high-end displays called Oled that are used as screens for premium smartphones, is expected to increase "substantially." It expects to spend more, however, on mobile marketing of its upcoming large-screen smartphones, to be announced next week, which Samsung typically uses to distract consumers from new iPhone launches by Apple.
Samsung, the world's largest smartphone maker, said its April-June net income rose 2 percent over a year earlier to KRW 5.85 trillion ($5.17 billion or roughly Rs. 34,650 crores), compared with KRW 5.75 trillion a year earlier.
That was slightly higher than forecasts, which have been revised upward in recent months to reflect stronger-than-expected sales of the new phones. Analysts had forecast net income of KRW 5.79 trillion, according to FactSet, a financial data provider.
Sales rose 5 percent to KRW 50.94 trillion ($45 billion), while operating profit surged 18 percent to KRW 8.14 trillion ($7.19 billion), in line with the company's guidance earlier this month.
Samsung beat forecasts even as growth in the overall smartphone industry slowed. Its rival Apple, the world's second-largest smartphone maker, is struggling to boost iPhone sales and reported a 27 percent quarterly drop in profits.
Samsung's mobile business reported KRW 4.32 trillion ($3.82 billion) in operating income during the three-month period, its best quarterly performance since the second quarter of 2014.
Samsung estimates it shipped between 75.6 million and 78.3 million smartphones during the quarter, about twice as many as Apple's 40.4 million iPhone sales.
The Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge smartphones drove the profit gain. The company launched the latest versions of its flagship smartphones in March, several weeks sooner than it did last year. Early launches helped Samsung report strong sales during the first quarter, and the latest results dispelled doubts it could sustain the momentum during the second quarter, since consumers continued to snap up new phones in the spring.
The company also reduced its mid- and low-end Galaxy models, helping to cut costs. During the earnings conference call, Samsung's mobile business official said the company will launch the Galaxy C series exclusively for Chinese consumers.
The stellar performance of Samsung's mobile division is a sign that its experiment with smartphone designs is paying off.
Samsung introduced the first of its flagship Edge smartphone series, which features curved displays that wrap around two corners of the device. But in 2015, it failed to capture demand because it ran into trouble mass producing those curved displays. The S7 Edge, with similar designs as its predecessor, saw robust demand from consumers and this time Samsung was able to deliver the products on time. The company said the Galaxy S7 Edge sales proportion increased.
The strength of the Galaxy S7 has boosted Samsung's own component businesses. Sales of Oled, or organic light-emitting diode, display panels rose, helped by healthy sales of flagship smartphones and higher demand for flexible displays for the S7 Edge. Samsung dominates the global supply of Oled display panels for mobile phones.
Samsung is scheduled to announce the latest iteration of its Note series, the Galaxy Note 7, featuring a giant screen and a stylus, on August 2.

Home | Apple Says One Billion iPhones Have Been Sold

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Apple on Wednesday reported decline in iPhone sales
  • Tim Cook says iPhone has become one of history's most important products
  • Other services of Apple are blooming as well

Apple announced Wednesday the sale of its billionth iPhone, a milestone for the company as it seeks to keep momentum in a competitive smartphone market.
Chief executive Tim Cook made the announcement at a staff meeting at the company's California headquarters.
"iPhone has become one of the most important, world-changing and successful products in history," he said in a statement.
"It's become more than a constant companion. iPhone is truly an essential part of our daily life and enables much of what we do throughout the day. Last week we passed another major milestone when we sold the billionth iPhone. We never set out to make the most, but we've always set out to make the best products that make a difference."
The news comes a day after Apple reported a drop in iPhone sales over the past quarter, a second straight drop after uninterrupted growth since its introduction in 2007.
Apple sold 40.4 million iPhones in the quarter ending June 25, down 15 percent from a year earlier, highlighting concerns over growth for the iconic smartphone.
The quarterly results underscored the challenges for Apple, which has built a huge business around the iPhone but is unlikely to see continued growth, due to a saturated smartphone market and increased competition.
Apple has been seeking to diversify its product line and move into services for a more stable revenue base, while keeping users in its ecosystem with offerings such as music, connected cars and its Apple Watch.
